Activity Feed

About

The Activity Feed is one of the most important screens within the Live Market Summary and provides a constant flow of updates about activity happening in the market. This is most useful in showing how National Grid are balancing the system and how market participants are responding to this approach. To find out more about these actions, each entry has a link that can be used to find out more about a given plant and further detail such as BOD Changes, which show where plants have increased or decrease the price at which they will provide additional power increases of decreases provide a wider view of the general market.

The Chart can be filtered by Message Selection, Fuel, Location or Units. Furthermore, it is possible to pause the updates – filter "Play Pause" or to chose different kind of notification sounds for different activities.

Included Messages

The following messages occur within the Activity Feed:

Big BOD Change (Bid) A change in one of the declared bid prices to turn down in the Balancing Mechanism (a change of at least £40/MWh)
BOD Change (Bid) A change in one of the declared bid prices to turn down in the Balancing Mechanism (a change of less than £40/MWh)
Big BOD Change (Offer) A change in one of the declared offer prices to turn up in the Balancing Mechanism (a change of at least £40/MWh)

Big BOD Change (Bid+Offer) A change in one of the declared bid prices to turn down and one of the declared offer prices to turn up in the Balancing Mechanism (a change of at least £40/MWh)
BOD Change (Bid+Offer) A change in one of the declared bid prices to turn down and one of the declared offer prices to turn up in the Balancing Mechanism (a change of less than £40/MWh)
De-Rated Margin A De-Rated Margin has been published that is below 3000MW
Demand Control Event A Demand Control Event has been flagged
High Freq A frequency value of 50.2Hz or higher has occurred
LoLP Greater Zero A Loss of Load Probability (LolP) has been published that is greater than zero
Low Freq A frequency value of 49.8Hz or lower has occurred
MEL Drop A unit has seen its Max Export Limit (MEL) decrease by 15 MWh or more below generation levels
MEL Incr A unit has seen its Max Export Limit (MEL) increase by 15 MWh or more below generation levels
MNZT Change A unit has changed its MNZT (Minimum Non-Zero Time), changing the minimum time it must run for before it can return to zero output after a start.
MZT Change A unit has changed its MZT (Minimum Zero Time), changing the minimum time it must remain at zero after a shutdown before it can be restarted again.
NDB Change A unit has changed its NDB (Notice to Deliver Bids), changing the notice required before a unit can respond to a Bid instruction to turn down.
NDO Change A unit has changed its NDO (Notice to Deliver Offers), changing the notice required before a unit can respond to a Offer instruction to turn up.
NDZ Change A unit has changed its NDZ (Notice to Deviate from Zero), changing the amount of warning required to start. When this drops from a larger number to under 85 minutes this indicates a unit is ready to come online.
Other B/O Acceptance A unit that is not wind or 'Peaking' has been adjusted in the Balancing Mechanism but now but without a change in profile noted for an energy (non-locational) reason
Other B/O Acceptance (T) A unit that is not wind or 'Peaking' has been adjusted in the Balancing Mechanism but now but without a change in profile noted for a non-energy (locational) reason
Other Bid Acceptance A unit that is not wind or 'Peaking' has been turned down in the Balancing Mechanism for an energy (non-locational) reason
Other Bid Acceptance (T) A unit that is not wind or 'Peaking' has been turned down in the Balancing Mechanism for a non-energy (locational) reason
Other Offer Acceptance A unit that is not wind or 'Peaking' has been turned up in the Balancing Mechanism for an energy (non-locational) reason (colour darkens at higher prices)
Other Offer Acceptance (T) A unit that is not wind or 'Peaking' has been turned up in the Balancing Mechanism for a non-energy (locational) reason (colour darkens at higher prices)
Peaking B/O Acceptance A battery/DSR/OCGT/recip/hydro units has been adjusted in the Balancing Mechanism but now but without a change in profile noted for an energy (non-locational) reason

RDRE Change A unit has changed its Ramp Down Rate for Export parameters.
REMIT Failure A REMIT message has been received which applies within the next 2 days that does include the word 'failure' in the description
REMIT Other A REMIT message has been received which applies within the next 2 days that does not include the word 'failure' in the description
RURE Change A unit has changed its Ramp Up Rate for Export parameters.
System Price A new system price has been declared that is less than £0/MWh.
System Price A new system price has been declared that is between £0/MWh and £30/MWh.
System Price A new system price has been declared that is between £30/MWh and £70/MWh.
System Price A new system price has been declared that is between £70/MWh and £200/MWh.
System Price A new system price has been declared that is between £200/MWh and £1000/MWh.
System Price A new system price has been declared that is greater than £1000/MWh.

SEL Change A unit has changed its Stable Export Limit (SEL) or minimum stable generation below which it cannot generate without switching off.
Sonar Notification A sonar message from National Grid has been issued.
System Warning A message has come through from National Grid as a system warning.
Unit Starting (FPN) A unit has been noted to be declaring a positive FPN for a future period, where the FPN figure is currently less than or equal to zero. This FPN figure is the Final Physical Notification, or the pre-balancing generation schedule.
Unit Stopping (FPN) A unit has been noted to be declared a zero (or negative) FPN for a future period, where the FPN figure is currently greater than zero. This FPN figure is the Final Physical Notification, or the pre-balancing generation schedule.
Wind Constraints A wind farm has had it's balancing volumes adjusted without this being locational
Wind Constraints (T) A wind farm has had it's balancing volumes adjusted for a locational reason

Data Service

The data for the Activity Feed can be extracted from the API. The parameters are as follows:

The activity feed includes a field called decoabletext which allows for automated parsing of the activity feed messages. This is based upon being a text field split on '|' with the following set of templates :
